FASTING YOUR WAY TO GOOD HEALTH
Brought up in Indian Hindu family, I was accustomed to fasting. My mother used to fast for a day in order to celebrate a particular day. She used to wake up very early in the morning 3.00 - 4.00 a.m. and eat once and then fast (not even water) for the whole day till moon appeared in the evening. Some people fast on certain weekdays to appease some deity. I seems religion is helping people maintain a good health.
Let us leave behind customs, festivals or religion and think of fasting once a week in order to detoxify our bodies and give rest to the digestive system. Our liver, pancreas, gall bladder, intestines are working all day releasing enzymes, insulin and digestive juices and absorbing nutrients. Food we eat contains carbohydrates, fats and proteins which need to be metabolized and absorbed into the body to provide energy to work and live. Internal organs work day and night and may need some rest. Fasting helps in resting the vital digestive organs for some time and also helps in mandatory removal of toxins from the body. In this process the body may utilize the unused or stored nutrients also. Fasting revitalizes your body, you feel new energy. It also increases your will-power immensely.
Any kind of solid food may go against fasting principles. So just go for water and occasional juice to get required energy to work. Eating some fruits like bananas and apple very early in the morning may be fine.
